Note 1694:
John Hurlbut Jr., petitioned the General Assembly to appoint a committee to lay out the grant of 120 acres of land made to his grandfather Thomas Hurlbut Sr., of Wethersfield, the emigrant ancestor of the family. 'John Collins and John Bacon of Middletown were appointed to lay out the Lot, where said John Hurlbut shall direct them, not interfering with other grants, John Hurlbut's charge.' (State Record).

His son John and son-in-law JacobWhitmore were executors. To son John he gave the bond in the hands of John Hamlin, and the land where he had erected a house (with the home lot) upon the east side of the river (Chatham) with also all his interest in the undivided lands in Wethersfield. He left legacies to his daughter Rebecca, wife of Jacob Whitmore; to grandson John Hurlbut, a minor, son of John 3rd; to children of 2nd son Daniel, viz: Susanna and Hannah, lands, and 15 pounds to Esther.
